Public Works Committee goes to Norfolk Island

THIS WEEK, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works (the committee) will visit Norfolk Island, to conduct a site inspection and public hearing for its inquiry into the Multi-purpose Service Facility—Stage 1 Residential Aged Care Replacement project being proposed by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sports and the Arts (the Department).

The Department is seeking parliamentary approval to deliver a new 16-bed residential aged care facility, mortuary, ancillary storage and warehouse structures, upgraded site-wide infrastructure (electrical, water supply, wastewater, stormwater, communications, roads and footpaths), and the demolition of redundant facilities.

The facilities aim to support the long-term needs and wellbeing of Norfolk Island’s ageing population. The total estimated cost of the proposed works is $51.6 million (excluding GST).

The committee will conduct a site inspection at the Norfolk Island Multi-Purpose Services Facility near the island’s main town centre at Burnt Pine and be briefed in private by Departmental officials on the project, prior to conducting a public hearing with Departmental witnesses later in the day.

Interested members of the public are welcome to attend the public hearing in person at the location listed below. The hearing will not be broadcast live due to telecommunication limitations on the Island, but will be uploaded to the Parliament’s website following the Committee’s return to Canberra.

Date: Thursday, 5 November 2026
Time:
1pm – 1.40pm (NFDT)
Location: Sirius Room, Paradise Island Resort & Hotel

Note: the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works is not involved in the tendering process, awarding of contracts or details of the proposed works. Enquiries on these matters should be directed to the relevant Commonwealth entities.
