Manufacturing Industry Innovation Precinct board meets for the first time

 

A PHALANX of some of the most experienced people in Australian manufacturing gathered last week for the ‘establishment' board meeting of the Manufacturing Industry Innovation Precinct.

The first working meeting of the group, which the Federal Government is now referring to as the Manufacturing Precinct board, will be in July.

Albert Goller, former managing director and chair of Siemens Australia and New Zealand, has established and will chair the Manufacturing Precinct board, which features industry leaders including Boeing Research and Technology Australia general manager, Mike Edwards; Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation chair, Professor Paul Greenfield; Toyota Motor Corporation Australia executive director for corporate services Mike Rausa; B&R Enclosures director and general manager, Christine Bridges Taylor; and Universal Biosensors vice president of business development, Dr Fred Davis.

It is a mix of experienced people from leading manufacturers, unions and the research sector.

The Manufacturing Precinct is part of the Government's Industry Innovation Precinct initiative, a major focus of the Government's $1billion Plan for Australian Jobs.

Minister for Climate Change, Industry and Innovation, Greg Combet, said the industry-led Manufacturing Precinct board would help build a culture of innovation and collaboration across manufacturing in Australia.

"The board includes a strong mix of major manufacturers and SMEs, along with representatives from unions, the research sector and the manufacturing value chain," Mr Combet said.

"We know that collaboration and innovation are vital to improving the productivity of our industries and these experienced business and research leaders will work with our manufacturing sector to improve knowledge and skills, deploy technology and develop growth-oriented businesses."

The Manufacturing Precinct board includes:

Paul Bastian - Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union national secretary;

Dr Fred Davis, Universal Biosensors vice president of business development;

John Dixon, Silk Logistics Group managing director;

Dr Calum Drummond, CSIRO Manufacturing, Materials and Minerals group executive;

Mike Edwards, Boeing Research & Technology Australia general manager;

Professor Paul Greenfield AO, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation chair;

Michael Heard, member of South Australian Premier's Science and Industry Council and former CEO of Codan Ltd;

Dr Frank Koentgen, Ozgene director and chief executive officer;
