Kylie Paatsch urges leaders to know, show and grow their teams

By Leon Gettler, Talking Business >>

IN THE AGE of artificial intelligence (AI) and general ‘busyness’, the big challenge for leaders is get the most out of their teams. Many just don’t have time.

Kylie Paatsch from Kyle Paatsch Leadership said there is a clear process she sets out for her clients. The key, she said, is for leaders to build connections with their teams.

“If you don’t have connection, you won’t have engagement, you won’t have buy-in and you certainly won’t have loyalty from the people you’re hoping will help you achieve whatever goals that you’re setting out to achieve, or strategies you want to implement or execute,” Ms Paatsch told Talking Business. Kylie Paatsch Kyle Paatsch Leadership

She said the framework she uses for her clients is the Know-Show-Grow Model.

“Essentially the ‘Know’ is about knowing your people really well at that relational level,” Ms Paatsch said.

“And the Show part of the model is about showing your people that you know, so show what you know, show that you care and show the way – so really provide that clarity.

“The Grow part of the model is to grow capability, initiative and ownership.

“Which are three really important things that you want to be able to grow when you’ve got a team of people that you’re relying on,” she said.

“As a leader, you gain credibility but the people in your team, they gain confidence because they’re seen and heard and understood. They’ve also got clarity because they’re shown the way.

“And at that intersection of Grow and Show, as a leader you get engagement and your team members will take ownership when you show them the way and give them the opportunity to take responsibility, initiative and all those things.

“And at the intersection of Know and Grow, you get loyalty from those people and they get validation.”

Trust your people and they’ll trust you

To avoid over managing, leaders need to set people up so that they know what’s expected – and give them the opportunity. The key, she said, was “to trust them”.

“If you want trust, you’ve got to give a bit of leeway and trust yourself,” Ms Paatsch said.

She said ownership and alignment in teams is about the relationship.

“Also the connection that team members have with each other and there’s a few things that sit with that,” Ms Paatsch said.

“So it’s important for you to have regular conversations, it’s important to be communicating,, it’s important to be really clear and to help the ream circumnavigate as well.”

Ms Paatsch said this applied equally to conversations with the team and with one to one conversations with individuals.

Time-poor leaders meet AI-enabled staff

Ms Paatsch said management and leadership had become particularly challenging in these times “when leaders don’t have time” and when “everyone is using artificial intelligence”.

“I had a leader recently working with me who said they feel they get more connection, more clarity, more advice, more guidance from a chat bot than they do from their leader,” she said.

“So yes, they’ll always be busy, there’ll be a lot to juggle, but I always say to leaders you’ve got to make your people a priority too.”

Ms Paatsch said engagement strategies often failed because leaders did not get to the core of what was getting in the way of engagement.

“Organisations and leaders often don’t take the level of responsibility they should or could around their contribution to engagement,” Ms Paatsch said.

“I’ve also seen it so many times, when organisations or leaders will know that engagement is down. They’ll do these workshops of all these things that they can put in place and do – and then, nobody follows through on it.” Leon Gettler suit 300pxw
