Brokering Cambodia's Peace Accords

The Paris Peace Accords on Cambodia were a significant achievement, involving substantial diplomatic efforts by many stakeholders within and outside of Cambodia and Southeast Asia. Australia, amongst other crucial countries, played a pivotal role in brokering the peace agreements and ending years of armed conflict in Cambodia. This session examines the diplomatic and negotiation strategies adopted by the countries involved in achieving the peace agreements, and the challenges they overcame in the process.

 

Peacebuilding in Post-Conflict Cambodia

The military operation and the peacekeeping process post-Paris involved substantial commitment from the international community. This session looks at the peacebuilding efforts in post-conflict Cambodia and the factors necessary for sustainable peace, post-war reconstruction and transition to democracy.

Reflections on Democracy and Peacebuilding in Southeast Asia

Described by many at the time as one of the most complex and ambitious peace agreements in history, the Paris Peace Accords provide an important case study for peacebuilding in Southeast Asia. This session explores the lessons that can be learned from the agreements, and invites wider reflections on peace, democracy and human rights in the region from a number of participants.
