Big Ass Fans propelled by Australian innovation award
A DEVELOPER and manufacturer of innovative electrical fans has demonstrated there is always a better way to do things, being lauded for its designs and products in the Australian Business Awards 2021 (ABA100).
Big Ass Fans Australia has joined the ABA100 this year, winning the Business Innovation award. Big Ass Fans has engineered and manufactured hi-tech fans since its inception in 1999 in the US, and has had an Australian presence since 2009 from Brisbane.
Big Ass Fans Australia managing director Shaun Brehaut said his team was “thrilled to be recognised as winners of ABA’s Business Innovation Award”.
“Winning this award is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved at Big Ass Fans,” Mr Brehaut said. “As the world leader in transforming industrial, commercial and residential spaces with innovative airflow solutions, we pride ourselves on our commitment to researching and developing new innovations and more impactful environmentally-conscious decision making across all areas of our business.
“We are on a mission to make the world safer, healthier and more productive and we carry that through everything we do as we work towards a more sustainable global ecology.”
Big Ass Fans also recently won Good Design Australia’s Product Design Gold Award for the company’s innovative new UV-C technology, paired with its Haiku with UV-C fan.
Big Ass Fans attributes its success to the company’s forward-thinking, proactive approach as well as its constant research and development efforts towards better innovative products, Mr Brehaut said.
The company saw the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to shift its commercial priorities to research and develop better airflow systems. Mr Brehaut said Big Ass Fans needed to change the game and implement technology that would seamlessly combine stunning design, a reduction in energy consumption and a product that improves air quality.
Big Ass Fans was determined to lead the way in innovation and research through extensive testing, including partnering with industry-leading scientists in a military-grade test facility with verified third-party laboratory tests. Through this process, Big Ass Fans created the specially-designed Haiku with UV-C ceiling fan.
Haiku is the first ceiling fan to incorporate sensors and microprocessors to create a fixture that monitors room conditions and learns user preferences. The system is known as Big Ass Fans’ SenseME technology.
Haiku’s integrated inverter drive motor helps Haiku exceed Energy Star efficiency requirements for residential ceiling fans by 450 percent.
By integrating all of these features with a UV-C uplight on top of the fan motor, pathogens pass through an antimicrobial zone created by the UV-C light, which destroys the pathogens and returns air to the occupants below. This is known as Big Ass Fans’ Clean Air System.
Through third party lab testing, The Big Ass Fans Clean Air System UVGI (UV-C) Antimicrobial Technology killed 99.9 percent of viruses in the air in 20 minutes, including SARS-CoV-2 and PhiX174 bacteriophage.
The combination of airflow with air-purifying technology means the pathogens in any occupied space are constantly being neutralised, providing a healthier and happier environment, according to Mr Brehaut.
“Combining cutting-edge, whisper-quiet operation, smart home technology with a sleek design through automatic sensors and smartphone app control options, the Haiku fan is natural and simple solution, driven by both precision engineering and artistic sensibility,” he said.
Big Ass Fans has engineered and manufactured premium fans since its inception in 1999 in the US, and has had an Australian presence since 2009, with an office and warehouse based in Brisbane.
